Apple’s iTunes revenues don’t include $7 billion paid to app developers! Apple’s iTunes revenues don’t include $7 billion paid to app developers!(0)

Apple has paid its iTunes App Store developers a cumulative $7 billion, with $5 billion of that paid out just in 2012. However, those payouts aren't included in its reported $12.9 billion in iTunes revenues for 2012.

Horace Dediu of Asymco clarified that Apple's "iTunes/Software/Services" counts wholesale revenues of iTunes Music sales, but "agency model" revenues of Apps and iBooks, meaning that Apple only counts its 30% cut of apps within iTunes revenue, not the more than $7 billion that it has paid out to app developers.

The rapid increase in the pass-through payments Apple has made to its developers shows how fast the company's own app revenues are actually growing. It also highlights why developers are targeting iOS first, or exclusively, while largely ignoring Android and other mobile platforms. Read More

In the latest installment of its "iEconomy" series, The New York Times takes a look at the advances made by Apple and Foxconn to improve working conditions at the Chinese factories churning out Apple products since a major push began earlier this year. The report details many changes such as wage increases and shorter working hour limits that have previously been disclosed, but also takes a peek behind the scenes to offer a glimpse of how executives at both companies have reacted to the situation.

The report shares details on a meeting between Apple and Foxconn executives and representatives of the Fair Labor Association (FLA), which began independent monitoring of working conditions earlier this year. At the meeting, FLA president Auret van Heerden outlined a number of shortcomings found in Foxconn's facilities. Read More

It’s a shame, but it’s the walled iOS garden we all live in.

That doesn’t mean you can’t use Siri to get directions with Google Maps, however. You don’t even need to jailbreak. There’s a simple trick that makes it possible.

Australian airliner moves to iPhones for business, iPads for pleasure! Australian airliner moves to iPhones for business, iPads for pleasure!(0)

Australian airline Qantas previously announced it is dropping BlackBerry in favor of Apple’s iPhone and issuing iPads to pilots, but now it is rolling out iPads to passengers to compliment a new in-flight entertainment streaming service.

Qantas is abandoning RIM due to a recently conducted employee survey that indicated airline staffers prefer Apple’s smartphone offering. CIO Paul Jones told The Sydney Morning Herald that the iPhone offers a “user-friendly interface and simple access to emails, contacts and calendars, as well as meeting all Qantas’ security requirements.”

Staff members can also carry Android devices under the airline’s bring-your-own-device policy. The move to Apple’siPhone will save Qantas millions of dollars, as will transitioning to the iPad to replace costly paper in the cockpit, according to NewStraitTimes. The airline will dole 2,200 iPads to pilots to improve communication and cutback on printed charts and manuals. The 64Gb iPads with 3G will save the airline about $1.5 million annually. Read More
